About Betty J
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Betty J. Phillips began singing at a very young age, often leading solos in both children and teenage choirs at her church. Her passion for music was evident early on, and she honed her vocal and musical skills at the renowned Rainey Institute of Music in Cleveland, OH, where she studied classical music and theory for several years.
After relocating to Washington, D.C., Betty became a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, where she joined the Young Adult Fellowship Ensemble choir under the leadership of gospel legend Richard Smallwood. It was during this time that she deepened her understanding of choral discipline and expanded both her tonality and melodic range. Under Smallwood’s mentorship, Betty also learned how to present herself with skill, poise, and professionalism—both musically and personally.
Betty’s vocal style is deeply inspired by gospel and soul greats such as Yolanda Adams, Karen Clark-Sheard, Kelly Price, Kim Burrell, Tamela Mann, and many other influential female artists. These powerful influences helped shape her sound, but Betty is far more than just a vocalist in the making—she is a truly gifted singer with a voluminous range and a voice that draws listeners in. Her unique talent and heartfelt delivery leave a lasting impression, making her a standout in any setting.
